Penang Hawker Food Center In Gurney & Char Kuew Teow In Jln Burma

I went to penang on the second day of Chinese new year. It was a hectic journey to the pearl of orient as we were cramped in the jammed along the bridge. But the tiredness was well paid with the yummy food during dinner.

Penang is well known for it hawkers food. Many people come to Penang just for the food. Even it is common to see Singaporean flew to the island just for food. Lately, New York Times published their must visit place for the year 2009. It was no surprise to see Penang was in second place after Beirut. In Fact, according to the publishing, only Phuket is nearest rank of must visit place in South East Asia is Phuket (No. 21st) as compared to Penang.

(Left To Right : Roasted Stingrays, Roasted oyster, Laksa, Roasted some species of snails, Rojak, and Squids)

I Think part of it because of the recently closing of the Suwarnabhum Airport in Bangkok that diverted many tourist from Thailand to Penang made the island is well known.

So, we went to the gurney drive hawker food center. The center is very popular among locals and tourist. It is located in the heart of gurney drive, 10 minutes from Komtar Tower (depending on traffic). Most of the tourist will get hotel room in Gurney Drive. This can avoid to drive to the Penang Hawker Center at peak hours. And If you do drive, please come early to get a parking space for your car.

There are lots of choices of food you can order. From Penang Rojak, laksa, Char Kuew Teow, roasted squid, fried mee, prawn, you just name it. It is just the matter weather you can eat or not. hahaha.. I tried the baked oyster. Not bad. Tasty and a bit salty. The Penang Rojak is worth trying as well. But just be careful in choosing the stall. Some of the them , the Rojak gravy is too sweet. My advice, if you want Penang Rojak, choose the stall far inside. There is one Indian stall selling it .

The laksa is OK also but bit spicy. hahah what you aspect. It is Malaysian eating. If not spicy, it is not complete.
(Penang Char Kuew Teow)

Most people says, if you go to Penang, and you don't try the Char Kuew Teow then your visit is useless. I love Char kuew teow. In fact, i always order one if i go to any hawker food stall. But I dont really like the Char Kuew Teow here (In Penang Hawker Center). May be because it was pre-cook before selling it to customers. The prawn was not fresh and normally the cook it in bulk, make the taste not that perfect.

If you are looking for the fresh Char Kuew Teow in Penang, go to one Chinese restaurant in Jalan Burma. I forgot the name of the restaurant, but you can see on the map here. In this restaurant they served freshly cook food. Other then Char Kuew Teow, you can also try chicken rice, chee cheong fun and many other food.
